about our tours

Tamarillo's 'Walk like an Italian' guided and un-guided tours take place in lesser-visited parts of northern and central Italy.

To ‘walk like an Italian’ means to travel to places away from Italy’s more famous (and busier) destinations, to follow trails and visit places recommended by local people and - especially - to enjoy the food and wine particular to each area.

The 10-day guided tour crosses five diverse landscapes: urban, coastal, alpine, rural, and island.

Each day there are different walks to choose from, ranging from gentle strolls to challenging treks.

Detailed guides to suggested walks, written by Tamarillo, will help you find your way along country lanes and wilderness trails, through villages, vineyards, towns and National Parks.

Each 10-day guided tour is led by Tamarillo’s directors Marina Mantovani (from Ferrara, Italy) and Anthony Norris (from Wellington, New Zealand).

The 5-day 'un-guided but fully-supported' tours each focus on two neighbouring areas, and have been designed to highlight the culinary, cultural and scenic features unique to each place.

Tamarillo’s local knowledge and experience takes the guesswork and stress out of deciding where to walk, eat and sleep. Even though you’re un-guided you’ll be fully-supported with Tamarillo’s phone and email support and network of personal contacts in each area.

All the accommodations for both the 5-day and 10-day tours have been tested and selected by Tamarillo’s guides.

Each small hotel and private apartment is chosen for it’s location, character and quality. All rooms have private bathrooms, with low-cost options and upgrades available.

Italy is renowned for its simply stunning landscapes, its cuisine, art and architecture.  Each Walk like an Italian tour includes all these aspects, plus:

- detailed notes on the best walks and treks in each area;
- advice on local museums, galleries, churches and other places of interest;
- boutique accommodations, each personally tested and selected;
- recommended local eateries, wineries and other culinary experiences;
- opportunities to meet and interact with local people;
- the flexibility to stop and enjoy special events as they happen, such as festivals, concerts, exhibitions, and markets.
