5-day low-cost adventurer

The Low-cost Adventurer takes guests into the heart of Kadavu Island’s indigenous culture.  Overnight stays in two Fijian communities give adventure travelers an authentic experience of  local lifestyles and hospitality. No camping!

The expedition's rich cultural dimension is matched by the beautiful wilderness sea-kayaking sections between each overnight stop.

Add to that plenty of coral-reef snorkeling, treks to 2 different waterfalls within the rain-forest and picnics on deserted beaches, this 5-day package offers high adventure at a low cost. (Scuba-diving can also be included).

5-day Low-cost Adventurer accommodation details:
- 2 nights at Waisalima Beach Resort, (private room with shared bathroom);  www.waisalima.com
- 1 night at Vacalea village, (home-stay accommodation with shared bathroom);
- 1 night at  Kadavu Island Wilderness Lodge (a traditionally-built guest-house, with a shared bathroom, on the small farm and coconut plantation owned by Tamarillo’s Fijian director. Ratu and Aliti and their young family live in the farmhouse nearby).

5-day Low-cost Adventurer itinerary:

Day 1: The expedition begins with the guides meeting the guests on their arrival at Kadavu Airport, (or after lunch at local resorts for those guests already in Kadavu Island).

Getting to Kadavu Island:  Once each day there is a non-stop flight from Fiji’s Nadi International Airport to Kadavu Island, operated by Pacific Sun. This is scheduled to depart Nadi at 12.40pm and arrive into Kadavu at 1.25pm. Other flight options are also available, but are not non-stop. Clients are responsible for booking their own air travel to and from Kadavu Island. This can be done on-line at: www.pacificsun.com.fj

From Kadavu’s tiny airport there’s a short walk to a nearby beach, followed by a 75-minute scenic boat ride along Kadavu's coastline to Waisalima Beach Resort. Time for a sea-kayaking refresher course, and a swim or snorkel off the beach.

Day 2:  After breakfast the kayakers paddle along the coast, stopping to swim and snorkel in a sheltered cove, and picnic on a beach. From there the journey continues deep into the mangrove forest at the head of Kavala Bay, from where a trail leads through the forest to a spectacular waterfall and swimming area. The support motorboat will whisk the group back to Waisalima Beach Resort for another night.

Day 3:  The day is spent sea-kayaking along Kadavu’s most remote, unspoiled and sparsely-populated coastline, through reef passages, across lagoons and past small islands, with snorkeling and picnic stops en-route. (For an extended adventure, a sea-kayaking and trekking side-trip to swim under another waterfall is also available).

From the beach a path leads up to Vacalea, a small Fijian village set on a hill-top, with panoramic views of the Great Astrolabe Reef. Participate in the sevusevu, the customary Fijian ceremony of welcome, enjoy the kava  and the local cuisine, and overnight in comfortable home-stay accommodation (private room, shared bathroom).

Day 4:  The morning can be spent taking time to soak up the village atmosphere, converse with the locals, experience their lifestyle, and visit the local primary school. Another option is to do the sea-kayaking and trekking side-trip to the waterfall mentioned in the plan for day 3.

After lunch in the village you can choose to either sea-kayak or trek to Kadavu Island Wilderness Lodge. Ratu and Aliti will introduce you to their family, farm and guesthouse, and will ensure you’re well-looked after in this peaceful, quiet place.

Day 5:  For those still keen for action, more sea-kayaking and snorkeling is possible before the 1-hour scenic boat-ride to Kadavu Airport for those flying out, or to other resorts for those staying longer in Kadavu Island.

Flying out from Kadavu Island:  Once each day there is a non-stop flight from Kadavu Airport to Fiji’s Nadi International Airport, operated by Pacific Sun. This is scheduled to depart Kadavu at 1.45pm and arrive into Nadi at 2.30pm. Other flight options are also available, but are not non-stop. Clients are responsible for booking their own air travel to and from Kadavu Island. This can be done on-line at: www.pacificsun.com.fj
